4YBY to Host First Designathon in Nigeria to Promote HIV Self-Testing
In a bid to further advance the practice of HIV self-testing among young Nigerians, a team of Nigerian researchers and scientists backed by the United States National Institute of Health (NIH) will be hosting the first-ever HIV-Self testing Designathon in Nigeria. The 4YBY Designathon is a 48- hour event in which young people from all over Nigeria will come together to collaborate, brainstorm, design, and communicate solutions to a social and health issue.
It should be recalled that the 4YBY group had organized a social media-driven HIV Self-Testing Contest to crowdsource innovative ideas on ways to promote HIV self-testing in Nigeria between October and November 2018. At an event on Saturday, December 1st 2018, the group rewarded 3 winners – Tony Akeju, Ginika Nzokwe, and Idris Badmus – for their creative presentations in the contest.
Speaking ahead of the Designation, 4 Youth By Youth Principal investigator, Dr Juliet Iwelunmor said, “we recognize that it has become very fashionable in our line of work to talk about youth voice or youth engagement, and often there is little behind that talk. However, for our first ever Designathon, young people themselves having a voice in collaborating, communicating and ultimately creating HIV self-testing solutions that matter to them, are our primary objective.”
One of the 4 Youth by Youth Ambassadors, Lana Promise, shared that “anything for young people without young people is not really for young people.” 4 Youth by Youth project advocates for the rights of young people to have a say with their own health and it is through this partnership and opportunities for dialogue that we can tackle issues such as low HIV testing which affects young people’s lives.
For the duration of the Designation, participants will be exposed to speakers and coaches who are accomplished entrepreneurs, tech experts, design gurus, and others, who will help refine their ideas. The goal of this challenge is to prototype ideas, products and services that are able to create social and economic value for young people all over Nigeria. So, put your talent, passion, and determination to the test at this super-cool event that will nurture and feature all your creative ideas.
Interested participants are advised to register in groups of 2 to 5 individuals.
