After several weeks of a computerized showdown between 96 teams on Playstation Soccer, the popular electronic sports tournament climaxed in a colorful end, when Deftone United clinched the star prize of a whopping sum of $1, 000 at the prestigious Hardly Apartments in Lagos.
A concept designed by Cikkz entertainment, is geared to help provide soccer loving Nigerians a chance to compete, sign up soccer gamers (with match allowances) and play with their favorite clubs on an exclusive e-platform. The second place prize was an all expense paid treat at the Hardly Apartments and the third winner got a signed jersey from the famous Kanu Nwankwo.
The competition served as a networking hub which top corporate executives from the banking sector, Oil and Gas, Information Technology and Telecommunications Industry were well represented. The teams had a combination of players from corporate organizations like Diamond Bank, Zenith Bank, Fidelity Bank, Shell, KPMG and Specs IT amongst others.
Ayodeji Akinso of Deftone United clinched the star prize while Remi Sanusi of Fresco United and Obinna Ehirim of Opiotus FC ranked second and third places respectively. The winners were crowned with Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals while DDO Torpedoes, the best player of the tournament carted away an exquisite wrist-watch.
According to Chidi Ifegbo, founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cikkz Entertainment, “This form of entertainment is uniquely designed with uniting the youth through soccer and gaming. We have provided a platform where families, youth, individuals who play games either on their PC, game console, mobile phone or ipads, can compete and have fun in local and international tournaments”.
Ifegbo stressed that as the world is going electronic, entertainment is also going electronic. Most European football clubs have a major fans base in Nigeria and this was reflected in the tournament as players proved their loyalty with their craving teams like Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona FC.
Though the tournament is registration based, each team has a manager that is also free to sign up maximum of 2 other players. Total of 96 teams entered for the competition and after the screening process, 32 teams qualified to jostle for a place in the semi finals of 4 teams before the grand finale. With over 400 spectators during the duration of the tournament, it was an experience as other activities infused included an artist and musical performance, football juggler’s display, sport celebrities’ engagement and a commentator’s corner. The grand finale also had in attendance Sports celebrities like BBC Sports Analyst, Mighty George and Candy of Brilla FM.
Cikkz Entertainment is a growing fun and creative outfit based in Lagos. The previous edition of PES was between bankers and undergraduates in Lagos. Participants were mainly from the University of Lagos and Emmanuel Oladokun emerged the crystal winner of Season 1 D’Challenger kick off tournament while the players and teams competed on video games based leagues like the English Premiership League (EPL), LALIGA and the UEFA Champions League (FIFA and PES). The organizers prepare for other game competitions which will match international standard like the “All Game Stars Tournament”.
