Globacom has become the second biggest mobile phone company in Nigeria, winning a market share battle that has pitted the Nigerian Second National Operator against Airtel Nigeria, which has again lost the spot, latest official telecoms market information by government has shown.
The outstripping of Airtel Nigeria by rival Glo ranks as the major upset in the latest market figures that shows MTN Nigeria in unchallenged lead with 56,516,759 active lines and control of 44% of its market segment within the same period.
Etisalat Nigeria, the market’s latest entrant, continues to record an impressive performance with 19,390,285 active lines and 15% share of its market segment according to the figure.
The telecoms regulator’s numbers shows that the nation’s telecoms continues to be a key hub of activities as active lines peaked at 130,780,703 while teledensity is now 93.41% indicating that telephony has become more pervasive across Nigeria.
With growing uptake of the internet and other data services in the country, activities in that space has seen GSM networks also posting 67,197,505 customers at mid-2014 with MTN Nigeria accounting for the biggest subscriber base of 33,994,987 with Glo following with 14,371392. Airtel Nigeria and Etisalat Nigeria account for 12,052,455 and 6,828,671 Internet customers respectively.
On the other hand, their CDMA counterparts posted a total of 156,181 Internet customers with Visafone in the lead with 152,919 users followed by Multi-Links with 3,262 customers.
On the flip side, a total of 10,815 incoming porting was recorded with Etisalat Nigeria posting the highest gains with 5, 081 followed by Glo with 2,540. Airtel Nigeria and MTN Nigeria recorded 1, 678 and 1, 516 incoming porting at mid-year according to NCC. Culled from TT. {fcomments}
