Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusole Sanwo-Olu has volunteered himself as a brand ambassador for Nigeria’s marketing and communications industry having witnessed first-hand the potency and viable contributions of the profession to the continuous success of his administration in the state. The governor made this disclosure and pledge over the weekend while delivering his keynote address at the 8th annual Marketing Edge Awards ceremony in Lagos where 178 brands and personalities were recognized and awarded for marketing excellence.
Underscoring the importance of marketing and its allied fields in good governance and business, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu asserted, “during the trying days of our stay in office, I benefited immensely from the strategic counsel of members of your trade who work with me internally and those who provide strategic counsel to me externally”.
In view of this he promised, “I have become the Marketing Ambassador of your profession amongst my colleagues in the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) and indeed to our government at the national level. We all need your craft”.
While acknowledging the leadership of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN), the Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN), the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR),the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN), the Experiential Marketers Association of Nigeria (EXMAN) and the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN), for your sacrifices and contributions to the development of the marketing communications profession in Nigeria, the governor also noted that over the last 5 decades, “the marketing communications profession has evolved remarkably to become a window for the world to see the creativity that resides within us.
‘Year-on-year, our creatives harvest laurels from international festivals around the world because our industry is fully developed to lend its resources to the imaginations of ‘creative rebels’ like Lanre Adisa, Steve Babeeko, Kelechi Nwosu and Israel Jaiye Opayemi, who lead a generation of fertile minds to create exciting campaigns that put our country on the global map’, he said.
While reiterating the importance of the industry, the self-proclaimed ‘marketing profession advocate’ added, “I am committed to its continued growth. That is the reason we are building a resilient and livable City that you and your clients will someday be proud of.”
“The infrastructure we are creating are gradually giving you the scenic settings you require for great Television Commercials that can earn more prestigious laurels from across the world.” The governor added that when his administration was crafting the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda, the Creative Industry and the Technology sector are some of the sectors the government had in mind at the conception of our Fibre Optic Project.
“With the laying of 6000 km of Fibre Metro Network across Lagos, our government is surely giving your operations the needed leg to show up at the appropriate places at the right time”.
The governor also confirmed his administration’s readiness to support the Lagos Advertising and Ideas Festival (LAIF) Awards. “Since our name is involved, we will provide the support to make it greater than ever before”, he promised while imploring all to begin to use the platform of LAIF and similar initiatives to draw the attention of the world to Destination Lagos.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Publisher/CEO, Marketing Edge Publications, Mr. John Ajayi explained that this year’s award is one with a special attraction and uniqueness as “it was organically planned and designed to reboot, re-start and re-energize the social, intellectual and entrepreneurial landscape of the Nigerian IMC. We are particularly excited to organize this award event to celebrate some of the best and brightest in our industry”.
Speaking on the rationale behind Governor Sanwo-Olu’s emergence as the “Brand personality of the Year”, Ajayi said, “MARKETING EDGE board of awards carried out a review of the Nigerian political environment with a view to identifying, rewarding and celebrating a political actor whose actions and programmes have strongly positioned him as a political icon. This is no less a person than the highly esteemed Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the executive governor of Lagos state”.
According to him, our governor was spotted to have been a shining light in the current political space in Nigeria with his giant strides in all aspects and ramifications. “The governor left no one in doubt that he was going to change the narrative in political leadership when during his political campaign launched the most celebrated, dynamic, result-oriented political campaign across media channels”.
The 8th edition of the Marketing Edge awards chaired by Otunba Seni Adetu, awarded 178 brands and personalities across categories such as young agencies, media establishments, companies, agencies, campaigns, regulatory and statutory agencies, personalities, Lifetime Achievement and outstanding political brand personality of the year.
